Window Seat Cushion Foam: A Complete Custom Cutting Guide

A window seat is one of the most charming features a home can have. A sun-filled reading nook. A breakfast banquette overlooking the garden. A bay window perch where the kids curl up with books. But the charm depends entirely on the cushion — a bare wooden bench is furniture. A bench with a perfectly fitted foam cushion is a destination.

Whether you are adding a cushion to an existing built-in, building a new window seat from scratch, or replacing a worn-out cushion in a breakfast nook, this guide covers everything: choosing the right foam type and thickness, measuring non-rectangular spaces accurately, ordering custom-cut foam, and assembling a finished cushion that looks and feels professionally made.

Choosing the Right Foam for a Window Seat

Foam Type: Indoor HR Foam for Almost Every Application

Window seats and built-in benches are indoor applications that rarely encounter moisture. Our 2.8 lb/ft³ high-resiliency indoor foam is the ideal choice. It provides the cushioning and support you need for comfortable seating, maintains its shape under years of daily use, and holds up to children jumping, pets lounging, and adults sitting for extended reading sessions.

The only exceptions where you would consider outdoor Dry Fast foam for a bench seat:

  • A mudroom bench where wet boots and gear sit on the cushion regularly
  • A screened porch or sunroom bench without climate control
  • A bathroom vanity seat near a tub or shower

For any dry indoor space, indoor HR foam is the superior choice for comfort and longevity. For a full comparison of the two foam types, see our indoor vs. outdoor foam guide.

Thickness: How Thick Should a Window Seat Cushion Be?

Cushion thickness affects both comfort and aesthetics. Here are recommendations based on how the bench will be used:

Use CaseRecommended ThicknessWhy
Decorative accent (mostly for looks)2–3 inchesProvides visual softness without bulk
Light seating (occasional perching)3 inchesComfortable for short sits, low profile
Regular seating (daily use reading nook)4 inchesThe sweet spot for most window seats
Extended seating (breakfast banquette)4–5 inchesSupports longer sitting sessions at meals
Sleeping surface (daybed / guest bed)5–6 inchesThick enough for occasional overnight use

The most popular thickness for window seats is 4 inches. It provides genuine seating comfort without making the bench look overstuffed or raising the seat height uncomfortably. At 4 inches in medium-firm HR foam, the cushion has enough depth to absorb your weight without bottoming out to the wooden platform beneath.

Firmness

Medium-firm is ideal for most bench and window seat applications. It provides enough give to be comfortable but enough support that you feel secure on the seat rather than sinking into it. For benches that double as sleeping surfaces (like a daybed in a guest room), medium-firm is also the best compromise between sitting and sleeping comfort.

For guidance on firmness selection based on body weight and intended use, see our foam density and firmness guide.

Measuring Your Window Seat

Window seats, bay windows, and built-in benches come in every shape imaginable — rectangles, trapezoids, L-shapes, curves, and multi-segment bay window configurations with angled joints. Here is how to measure each type accurately.

Rectangular Benches (The Simple Case)

If your bench is a straight rectangle:

  1. Measure the length of the bench from one end to the other (the long dimension, left to right as you face it).
  2. Measure the depth from the front edge of the bench to the back wall or backrest (front to back as you sit).
  3. Decide on your thickness based on the guidelines above.

That is all you need. Enter these dimensions directly into our foam configurator.

Bay Window Benches (Multi-Segment)

Bay windows typically have three flat segments joined at angles — a center panel flanked by two angled side panels. You have two options:

Option A: One continuous cushion. If you want a single cushion that wraps around the entire bay window, you will need to use the center panel as the main rectangle and account for the angled wings. This typically requires a custom shape. Make a paper template by laying butcher paper across the entire bench surface and tracing the outline. Contact us with the template for a custom quote.

Option B: Three separate cushions (recommended). Cut three individual rectangular cushions — one for each segment. This is simpler to order, easier to fit, and allows you to use our standard configurator for each piece. The joints between cushions sit at the angle breaks in the bay window, creating a clean, intentional look.

For three separate cushions, measure each segment independently: length, depth, and thickness. Place your order for three rectangles through the configurator.

L-Shaped Banquettes

Breakfast nook banquettes and kitchen bench seating often form an L-shape where two benches meet at a right angle. You have the same two options as bay windows:

One L-shaped cushion: Select the L-shape option in our configurator and enter the dimensions for both legs of the L (total length of each leg, width, and thickness).

Two separate cushions: Order two rectangles that meet at the corner. This is often the practical choice because a single L-shaped cushion is more difficult to store, remove for cleaning, and replace if damaged.

Curved Benches

For a bench with a curved front edge (like a turret or curved bay window), a paper template is the most reliable measuring method:

  1. Lay butcher paper over the entire bench surface.
  2. Press the paper into the corners and against the walls.
  3. Trace the outline, including any curves, with a marker.
  4. Cut out the template and verify it fits the bench.
  5. Note the thickness you want on the template.
  6. Photograph the template next to a tape measure for scale.

Send us the template and photos through our contact page for a custom quote. We cut to quarter-inch precision, so curved shapes come out matching your bench exactly.

Measuring Tips for Built-In Benches Without Existing Cushions

If you are adding a cushion to a bench that never had one, you are measuring the bench platform itself rather than an existing cushion cover:

  • Measure the platform surface from the back wall to the front edge.
  • Measure from one end to the other.
  • If there are obstacles (wall returns, window frames, support posts), note their positions and dimensions so the foam can be cut to accommodate them.
  • Check for square — measure diagonally from corner to corner in both directions. If the diagonals are not equal, the bench is not perfectly square and a paper template is the safest approach.

Building the Complete Cushion

Foam is the foundation, but a finished window seat cushion also needs a cover. Here are your options:

Option 1: Foam Only (DIY Cover)

Order just the foam and create your own cover. This is the most popular approach for handy homeowners and anyone working with a seamstress or upholsterer. You control the fabric choice, piping style, zipper placement, and ties.

Fabric recommendation: Medium-weight upholstery fabric (canvas, duck, linen blend, or indoor Sunbrella) in 54-inch width. For a basic box cushion cover, you need approximately 1.5 to 2 yards per cushion depending on size.

Option 2: Foam with Dacron Wrap

Add Dacron batting around the foam for a softer, more rounded appearance. The batting creates a gentle dome effect on the top surface and eliminates the crisp, boxy look that bare foam has inside a cover. We cover the benefits of Dacron wrapping in our couch cushion replacement guide.

Option 3: Foam Direct on Bench (No Cover)

For a temporary or budget approach, some homeowners place foam directly on the bench and drape a throw blanket, quilt, or fabric over it. This works for casual spaces but lacks the finished look of a proper cushion cover.

Window Seat Cushion Design Tips

Ties or Velcro

Bench cushions tend to slide forward, especially on smooth wood or painted surfaces. Sew fabric ties into the back corners of the cushion cover and tie them to cup hooks or small cleats on the bench. Alternatively, apply adhesive-backed Velcro strips to both the bench surface and the cushion bottom.

Piping and Welting

A piped (corded) edge around the cushion perimeter gives it a finished, professional appearance. If you are having a cover made, ask for self-welt (piping made from the same fabric) or contrasting piping for a designer touch.

Consider Storage Access

Many window seat benches have storage beneath a hinged top. If yours does, make sure the cushion is easy to remove — avoid gluing or permanently attaching it. Ties that untie or Velcro that peels are better solutions than permanent attachment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness is best for a window seat used by kids?

Three to four inches is ideal for children's window seats. Kids are lighter and do not need the depth that adults require. Four inches provides a genuine cushion feel, while three inches keeps the profile low and age-appropriate.

Can I stack two thinner pieces of foam instead of ordering one thick piece?

You can, but we do not recommend it for bench seating. Stacked layers shift during use and create an unstable seating surface. A single piece of the correct thickness provides uniform support without any movement between layers. Spray adhesive can bond two layers together if stacking is your only option.

How do I keep my bench cushion from sliding?

Attach adhesive-backed Velcro strips (the rough hook side) to the bench surface, and sew or attach the soft loop side to the cushion bottom. This holds the cushion securely but allows easy removal for cleaning or storage access.

Will 2.8 lb foam feel too firm for a reading nook?

No. Medium-firm 2.8 lb HR foam provides a supportive but comfortable seat that you can sit on for hours without discomfort. It is the same foam used in professional sofa cushions designed for all-day use. After a brief break-in period, most people find it perfectly comfortable for reading and relaxing.

The Bottom Line

A window seat cushion is a small project with outsized impact. A perfectly fitted foam cushion turns an empty bench into a favorite spot in the house — a place people gravitate to for reading, morning coffee, or just watching the world through the window.

Custom-cut foam ensures the cushion fits your exact space, in the exact thickness and firmness you want, with professional-grade material that holds its shape for years. No compromising with pre-made cushions that are almost-but-not-quite the right size.
