High-Resiliency Upholstery Foam, Cut to Your Exact Size
Our 2.8 lb high-resiliency (HR) foam is the same grade professional furniture manufacturers use — denser, longer-lasting, and more comfortable than anything you'll find at a big-box store.
Not All Upholstery Foam Is Equal
Foam density is the single biggest factor in how long your cushions last. Here's how different densities compare — and why we only sell professional grade.
| Density | Grade | Expected Lifespan | Assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 lb/cu ft | Budget | 6–18 months | Avoid |
| 1.8 lb/cu ft | Standard | 1–3 years | Acceptable |
| 2.0 lb/cu ft | Good | 3–5 years | Good |
| 2.5 lb/cu ft | Premium | 5–8 years | Great |
| 2.8 lb/cu ft | Professional | 8–12+ years | ★ What we sell |
We only sell 2.8 lb professional-grade foam — the same density used by quality furniture manufacturers.

What density upholstery foam should I use for a sofa?
For everyday sofa use, we recommend 2.8 lb high-resiliency foam. Foam density measures how much material is packed into each cubic foot — higher density means the foam holds its shape longer. At 2.8 lbs, this is the professional standard for furniture that sees daily use. Budget foam at 1.5–2 lb density compresses and goes flat within months.
What is the difference between high-density and high-resiliency foam?
Density (measured in lb/cu ft) refers to how much material is packed into the foam — more is better for durability. Resiliency refers to how quickly foam bounces back after compression. High-resiliency (HR) foam bounces back quickly and consistently, which is why it's the professional standard for upholstered furniture. Our foam is both high-density (2.8 lb) and high-resiliency.
Is your upholstery foam CertiPUR-US certified?
Yes — all of our upholstery foam is CertiPUR-US certified. This means it's made without ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, heavy metals, formaldehyde, or phthalates, and it's tested for low VOC emissions. Safe for your home and family.
What thickness upholstery foam is best for dining chairs?
Dining chair seat cushions typically use 2–3 inch thick foam. Thinner foam (1.5–2 inches) works well for firm chairs where you want support without bulk. Thicker foam (3–4 inches) creates a softer, more comfortable pad. Most dining chair replacement pads use 2 or 2.5 inches.
Can I get upholstery foam cut to size for a headboard?
Yes — upholstery foam for headboards is one of our popular uses. Most headboard projects use 2–4 inch foam. Simply measure the headboard panel, enter the dimensions in our configurator, and we'll cut the foam precisely. We recommend our 2.8 lb HR indoor foam for headboard upholstery.
